Face Value

The amount of money an issuer of bonds and other fixed income securities owes investors at maturity.

Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC)

A federally chartered insurer of deposits up to a maximum of $100,000 per depositor in commercial banks and thrift institutions.

Federal Funds Rate

The rate established by the Federal Reserve for inter-bank lending of short-term funds.

Federal National Mortgage Association (Fannie Mae)

Established in 1938, an independent federal agency that underwrites the issuance of home mortgages in the U.S.

Fee Only

When a financial advisor's only method of compensation is a fee for his or her services. Fees can be asset-based, fixed, or hourly.

Fee-Based

When a financial advisor will accept fees or commissions for his or her knowledge and services.

Fiduciary

A person who occupies a position of financial trust with respect to the assets of another person, for example, a financial advisor. In the financial service industry, fiduciaries are held to higher ethical standards than non-fiduciaries. Fiduciaries also have greater accountability for the advice they give investors.

Financial Plan

Prepared by a financial planner. A comprehensive plan that helps people achieve their financial goals. For example, determine goals, how much they need to save, how much they can afford to spend, when they can afford to retire, will they run out of money late in life, etc.

Fiscal Year

12 consecutive months that are used to report financial results and condition. Fiscal year is in contrast to calendar year that ends on December 31.

Fixed Fee

A flat fee that is charged by a financial professional for a service. For example, an advisor prepares a financial plan for $2,000.

Fixed Income Securities

Securities that pay fixed amounts of income. Bonds are the most common form of fixed income securities.

Folios

Investors select combinations of stocks that are included in a portfolio that they own and manage.

Forecast

A prediction for the future that is based on data and the experience of the forecaster. A high percentage of forecasts are suspect because certain events, for example the future direction of interest rates, are not predictable.

Foreign Exchange

Rates that are used to convert one currency into another.

Form 10-K

The annual report that public corporations must file with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) within 90 days of the close of the fiscal year.

Forward Price/Earnings Multiple

The current price of a common share divided by its estimated earnings per share in future years.

Front End Sales Load

Some mutual funds and other investments charge a sales commission (load) that is deducted from principal at the time of investment. For example, a $100,000 investment in a fund that has a 5% sales load would invest $95,000 after $5,000 of commissions is deducted.
